Allyson's research focuses on how experiences during childhood shape brain development, for better or worse. She is interested in the development of complex cognitive skills, as the networks supporting these skills develop slowly, and therefore may be susceptible to environmental influence throughout childhood. Complex cognitive skills are important for academic achievement, particularly in math and science.

She received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Berkeley in 2012, and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford in 2006. Her research is supported by a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
